With an expected 1.2 billion supporters around the world, the religion of Islam positions second just to Christianity in number of devotees. Islam was established by the prophet Muhammad in Arabia amid the early AD 600s. The Arabic word Islam signifies 'submission to Allah (God)'. Devotees of Islam are called Muslims, signifying 'the individuals who submit'. Most Muslims live in nations in North Africa, the Middle East and southern and focal Asia.
